A guided walking tour of Burnham Thorpe, birthplace of Horatio Nelson
Join us for a walking tour, walking in the footsteps of Lord Nelson and discover how his village has changed over the years.
We will explore the buildings and heritage of Burnham Thorpe as well as the many places in the village that Nelson had a connection with. You will see the many memorials that are found hidden around Burnham Thorpe.
The tour starts at All Saints’ Church where Nelson was baptised and where he worshipped as a child. We visit the Nelson Memorial Hall which is the villagers own memorial to Nelson and walk to the site of the Rectory, (pulled down in 1803), where Nelson spent his childhood.
Burnham Thorpe
Nelson’s Birthplace
Hear stories of Nelsons life in the village. Visit The Lord Nelson pub, originally called The Plough but renamed to celebrate his triumph at the Battle of the Nile.
You will also walk the same medieval path Nelson frequented through the village –first as a child, and later as an adult on half-pay while awaiting orders. This historic route leads directly to Burnham Overy Staithe, retracing the Admiral's regular journeys through the Norfolk countryside.
Your Guide
Having spent my entire life in the Burnhams—and the last 25 years specifically in Burnham Thorpe—my roots here run deep, with family ties stretching back to the mid-1850s. Together, we’ll uncover our village’s rich heritage and share the unique Nelson folklore and local stories that have been passed down through generations.
